SOCIAL media today saw a barrage of calls for Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to step down, after PKR’s dismal showing in the Malacca elections.

#Anwar was trending on Twitter this morning with more than 12,000 tweets. This came after PKR lost all 11 seats it contested in yesterday’s polls.

Football fans compared the PKR chief to Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who is to be sacked after yesterday’s 4-1 trouncing at Watford.

“Ole needs to go, Anwar too,” @dinieziliqram tweeted.

 “If Anwar does not make the decision to put this country first, then we will know for sure that he was never cut out to be prime minister. You could say that every PM we’ve had since Tunku was not cut out to be the PM we deserved but if Anwar does not resign, we may never will,” @tanjoolee said.

@Vincent47077532 said Anwar needs to take responsibility for PH’s defeat as he had accepted “frogs” who had defected from the other side.  

He added that the voters have punished PH for that.

@Sadbrain tweeted that he will not vote for PKR in the next election unless Anwar steps down.

@JonsonChong said Anwar is a liability.

Some came to the Pakatan Harapan leader’s defence.

“Anwar is the best we Malaysians have. But one man cannot win the war,” @khalidkarim said.

“PH didn’t lose because of Anwar’s poor frog strategies, but because they know what Umno/BN is capable of in causing political instability, even when we’re hit by a pandemic, if they didn’t get to form a state government,” @bron_to1 posted.

Some pointed out it was Amanah which had admitted the defected state reps into its fold but Anwar was being blamed instead.

Barisan Nasional won by a landslide 21 of the state’s 28 seats.

Elections were called after four assemblymen – Idris Haron (Sungai Udang-BN), Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor-BN),  Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu-Independent) and Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas-Bersatu) withdrew support for chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali last month, leading to the dissolution of the legislative assembly. – November 21, 2021.
