FAHMI Fadzil today lambasted the authorities for issuing a RM4,000 compound notice to an individual, believed to be a candidate in the Malacca polls, for wearing a jacket that carried the Pakatan Harapan (PH) logo.
The Lembah Pantai MP took to Twitter to criticise the action, calling it ridiculous.
“Crazy, wearing the Pakatan Harapan symbol also can be compounded,” he said.
Fahmi posted a photo of the compound issued, which states the offence as “candidate campaigning in Malacca wearing a Pakatan Harapan jacket”.
Putrajaya has banned political rallies, walkabouts and home visits during the campaigning period of Malacca’s 15th state elections to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Political parties and candidates have been advised to go online to reach voters.
Candidates are also allowed to campaign by using vehicles outfitted with loudspeakers to deliver their campaign speeches, subject to police approval.\
Fahmi sarcastically asked if the symbol spreads the coronavirus.
He said instead of the coronavirus, some are actually afraid of democracy.
He, however, did not name any party but it is evident that he took aim at the current government, led by Barisan Nasional.
“Because the symbol spreads the virus right,” he said.
“Just that it is not a Covid virus, but a democracy virus. That’s the virus they’re most afraid of.”
Several social media users called the move extreme and asked Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to nullify such compounds.
User @davidwong27 said: “This is just way too much lah! Requesting Minister Khairy to nullify this compound. It’s getting from bad to worse. Doesn’t make sense.”
The state will go to the polls on November 20.
PH won the state in the last general election but the state government collapsed following defections that allowed an Umno-led government to take over.
However, that state government was also ousted, after four assemblymen, including two from Umno, pulled their support for Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali. – November 12, 2021.
