THE government should step up enforcement against business owners who are confusing Muslims with ‘No pork’ or ‘pork-free’ advertisements, said a PAS lawmaker.

“‘No pork’ and ‘pork-free’ restaurants have become a trend recently. But what does this mean, as halal is more than just pork and they are two different issues,” said Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (Dungun-PN) during the debate on the amendments to the Trade Description Act in Dewan Rakyat today.
“Consumers depend on menus to know what they are ordering and as such these (pork-free) outlets should also state whether it has the halal logo or not,” said Wan Hassan.
He said that the ‘pork-free’ claims were being used to confuse Muslims.
“As such, I would like the government to state what are the steps being taken to create awareness campaigns for Muslims on the differences between halal and ‘pork-free’ restaurants,” said Wan Hassan.
It was previously reported that Muslim-operated restaurants found it difficult to get halal certification for their businesses and as such prefer to use ‘pork-free’ signages.
The Trade Description Act is a law to consolidate laws relating to merchandise marks with new provisions prohibiting misrepresentation of goods provided in the course of trade and false advertising. – October 28, 2021.
