THE government should step up enforcement against business owners who are confusing Muslims with ‘No pork’ or ‘pork-free’ advertisements, said a PAS lawmaker.

“‘No pork’ and ‘pork-free’ restaurants have become a trend recently. But what does this mean, as halal is more than just pork and they are two different issues,” said Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (Dungun-PN) during the debate on the amendments to the Trade Description Act in Dewan Rakyat today.

“Consumers depend on menus to know what they are ordering and as such these (pork-free) outlets should also state whether it has the halal logo or not,” said Wan Hassan.

He said that the ‘pork-free’ claims were being used to confuse Muslims.

“As such, I would like the government to state what are the steps being taken to create awareness campaigns for Muslims on the differences between halal and ‘pork-free’ restaurants,” said Wan Hassan.

It was previously reported that Muslim-operated restaurants found it difficult to get halal certification for their businesses and as such prefer to use ‘pork-free’ signages.

  • Please speak for yourself. Most Muslims can read, write and think for themselves. It is the politicians who blow things out of proportion to justify their selfish agenda.

  • We have too many politicians who are downright stupid. I dont believe Malays/Muslims dont know the difference between the two. Strangely these fat cat politicians have nothing religious about them other then lies about it. Simply shameful to keep saying Muslims are the most confused lot due to the lack of education.

  • TRUST in the truth of whatever label one reads is the highest level of harmony among people. For a business to lie about the product is foolhardy. When I donate money at the mosque, I do not even think whether that money was handled by a pork merchant previously. Is there anyway the government can assure me that the money/cash I am using is pork free? An idle mind is indeed a 'devil's workshop.
