RACIALLY charged comments hurled against national shuttler S. Kisona have no place in Malaysian culture, said National Unity Minister Halimah Sadique.

“For me, the racially charged comment on national badminton player Kisona Selvaduray is unacceptable in the multi-racial and multi-religious Malaysian culture,” she told the Dewan Rakyat today.

She advised social media users against fuelling public anger by playing up racial sentiments to offend others.

Halimah said this is important to preserve the unity in the Malaysian Family.

She noted that sports have long been a point of integration for Malaysians across all faiths and creeds.

Halimah was asked to comment on the issue by Cha Kee Chin (Rasah-Pakatan Harapan) as Kisona hails from his constituency.

Former Bersatu Pasir Putih division vice-chairperson Borhanuddin Che Rahim had made a racist remark on social media after Kisona, 23, lost in the singles semi-final of the Sudirman Cup 2021, which took place in Vantaa, Finland last weekend.

He resigned as Bersatu Pasir Putih division vice-chairperson after coming under fire for his remarks.

Borhanuddin’s racial slur using a word that is offensive to the Indian community was screen-capped and circulated widely. He has also been criticised by Bersatu deputy president and Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mazlan Lazim said the police will investigate Borhanuddin’s statement according to Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. – October 5, 2021.
