BERSATU will not take any action towards the party’s division leader in Kelantan for racist remarks against a national badminton athlete since he has apologised, its secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said.

Borhanuddin Che Rahim has also resigned as Bersatu Pasir Putih division vice-chairperson after coming under fire for remarks about national player S. Kisona, Hamzah added.

“At the party level we think the matter is settled as the individual has resigned from his position and we will summon him for an explanation soon,” he told the media after a ground breaking ceremony at the Terengganu Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) today.

Hamzah, who is also the home affairs minister, said that the police will investigate the matter further following a report lodged against Borhanuddin.

Hamzah added the issue should not be prolonged since Borhanuddin has admitted his mistake.

“There are other issues, while on this issue he has apologised,” he said.

Borhanudin had made a racist remark on social media after Kisona, 23, lost in the singles semi-final of the Sudirman Cup 2021, which took place in Vantaa, Finland last weekend.

Borhanuddin’s racial slur using a word that is offensive to the Indian community, was screencapped and circulated widely.

He has also been criticised by Bersatu deputy president and Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mazlan Lazim said that the police will investigate Borhanuddin’s statement according to Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. – October 4, 2021.
