THE chief executive officer of a company involved in the unfinished uCustoms project has been remanded for six days starting today following his arrest by the anti-graft authorities, Sinar Harian reports.

The 56-year-old was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday at the agency’s headquarters, with chief commissioner Azam Baki confirming the arrest.

The uCustoms project, said to be worth RM397.43 million, was meant to be a new IT system for the Customs Department as the existing one was first set up in 1995.

The failed project was highlighted in the Auditor-General’s 2019 Series 2 Report released earlier this week.

The project was a total of five extensions of 86 months after it failed to meet its original deadline in October 2015.

The report also noted that the company was picked despite reservations from a technical evaluation committee, and the failure to develop the uCustoms system has caused taxpayers to lose RM272.99 million. – October 2, 2021.
