JELUTONG MP RSN Rayer can attend tomorrow’s Dewan Rakyat sitting after Deputy Speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon agreed to shorten his two-day suspension to a day.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim (Port Dickson-PH) asked Rashid to consider his request for Rayer’s suspension.
“I would like to request the Chair to reconsider the decision to suspend YB Jelutong for two days so that he can attend the sitting,” he said.
Anwar said a number of MP’s have used the remark, and not only Rayer.
“About 40-50 of them used the shameful remark. So if you want to suspend, you will have to suspend 50 of them,” he said.
Responding to the request, Rashid said he respects the House and he too should be given the due respect by lawmakers.
“I can take that (request) into consideration and I have decided (for the suspension to be in effect) for one day. He can join tomorrow’s meeting but I hope the Opposition leader can advise him to tone down on the provocation so that we can resolve a lot of matters properly,” said Rashid.
Meanwhile, Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali (Kuala Nerus-PAS) proposed that Rayer should openly apologise for his act when he attends the sitting tomorrow as this is not the first time he has acted in such a manner.
Khairuddin said this will serve as a lesson to other lawmakers to behave.
Rayer was suspended earlier today for calling Rashid “shameful”.
The altercation began when Rayer asked why Rashid had rejected motions to remove speaker Azhar Azizan Harun.
Deputy speaker, don’t abuse your power. People are watching you. Shameful (memalukan),” he said.
Rashid responded by asking Rayer to retract his remarks, to which Rayer replied that he will not retract because it was a shameful act on Rashid’s part.
Rayer refused to back down and Rashid suspended him from proceedings, with the MP then shown the door. – September 14, 2021.
