SEKRETARIAT Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) raised RM92,800 via crowdfunding to pay RM62,000 worth of compounds issued to protesters at a vigil at Dataran Merdeka last week.
The #Lawan protest organiser said the money was raised in a day.
“SSR would like to thank Malaysians who contributed to the #Lawan legal aid and compound following the detention of 31 peaceful vigil participants at Dataran to commemorate the more than 13,000 Malaysians who have died as a result of Covid-19 on August 19,” it said in a press statement.
Thirty-one vigil participants were each fined RM2,000.
SSR said 668 people donated to the crowdfunding exercise. The average contribution was RM139, while many gave RM10 and RM20.
It said the monetary support it received showed that the demands of #Lawan for democracy and aid for the people were backed from people on all strata of society.
It said it would provide details of the fund and expenditure to ensure transparency and honesty.
“A more detailed report of spending for the #Lawan rally and our other series of protests will be made public soon.
“SSR also emphasises that we will repeat the #Lawan demands from time to time to ensure that the voice of the people continues to resonate until it reaches the ears of the authorities.”
In July, SSR held a series of protests to demand the resignation of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin over his failure to bring the Covid-19 crisis under control. – August 25, 2021.
