FORMER youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will be charged with money laundering at the Johor Baru Sessions Court tomorrow, sources from the anti-graft agency said today.

They said the Muar lawmaker will be charged under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLA) 2001.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said in a statement today that a Member of Parliament will be charged in Johor Baru tomorrow at 8.30am but no names were given.

Sources revealed to The Malaysian Insight the MP was Syed Saddiq. However, efforts to contact him have been futile.

Syed Saddiq was charged at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court on July 22 for misappropriating Bersatu funds.

The former Bersatu former youth chief pleaded not guilty to a charge of misappropriating RM1 million belonging to Bersatu before Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi.

He also pleaded not guilty to a second charge of misappropriating RM120,000 of election funds belonging to the party’s youth wing in April 2018.

The offence under section 403 of the penal code for misappropriation of funds is punishable by at least six months and up to five years in jail, caning and a fine.

Syed Saddiq was granted bail at RM300,000 for the first charge and RM30,000 for the second, both with one surety. The courts also ordered him to report to the MACC once a month.

He started a crowdfunding exercise on July 23 to collect money to pay for his bail and raised RM715,573 within 24 hours, more than twice the amount needed. – August 4, 2021.
