MUAR MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman closed his fundraiser today after he collected RM715,573 within 24 hours, after appealing to the public for help to settle his bail.

The former sports minister took to Facebook this evening to thank Malaysians for their help, adding that he was touched that nearly 10,000 people contributed to his fundraiser.

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

“I am forever indebted. I will never stop until we succeed in building Malaysia for all Malaysians.

“A Malaysia where every Malaysian can proudly call HOME. Our HOME,” he said in the post.

Syed Saddiq was granted bail of RM330,000 on two charges yesterday. He paid RM80,000 with the balance of RM250,000 to be paid by Tuesday.

He collected more than twice the value of bail within 24 hours, and recounted meeting a man at his office and assumed the man had come to ask for help.

“Turned out he wanted to contribute RM100 to me. I felt like crying,” he said.

“It’s in moments like this I am reminded why I joined politics.”

The Muar MP insisted he had not done so for position or money, but to build an advanced and dignified Malaysia.

“The more they press, the more I will fight.

“No threats. No intimidation. No offers will ever weaken my resolve to put Malaysia first. I am here because of the people,” he said.

Syed Saddiq yesterday pled not guilty to two charges related to the misappropriation of Bersatu funds.

The first was to a charge of misappropriating RM1 million belonging to Bersatu before Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi.

The second was an accusation he misappropriated RM120,000 of election funds belonging to the party’s youth wing from April 2018.

A day earlier, when news broke that he was going to be charged, Syed Saddiq alluded that the charges were political, adding he has faced threats every time Parliament convenes. Parliament will convene again on Monday after seven months.

“I’d rather go to court than enter Perikatan Nasional,” he had said. – July 23, 2021.
