When twisted minds ride on personal journeys

The Malaysian Insight

SELANGOR Speaker Hannah Yeoh is fine.

She does not need our pity or help because she is on solid ground. She sleeps easy every night, despite having to juggle being so many things to so many people – wife, problem-solver, listening post, keeper of peace in the state assembly, defender of her faith, etc

Hannah Yeoh believes that nothing she has belongs to her and that when all is said and done, she will be answerable to only God. It comes through in her autobiography, Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey.

Her relationship with God is what is paramount to her and that is what keeps her rooted in reality. Good for her.

Many Malaysians profess to be God-fearing individuals. They love to invoke the Almighty’s name at every turn, but think nothing of stealing from the coffers or doing anything that their faith prohibits.

Shouldn’t we pleased when a politician walks the talk? Shouldn’t we applaud when a young Malaysian is unafraid of talking openly about God?

Hannah Yeoh is on solid ground. Don’t worry about her.

If we must offer pity, it must be for Universiti Utara Malaysia senior lecturer Kamarul Yusoff.

From young, most of us have been encouraged to read widely and with a critical eye. ‎We have been told that we don’t have to agree with all what we read but neither should we assign conspiracies to people we don’t agree with.

We have been told that some books will inspire us and there will be books that will bore us to death.‎ We have tried to emulate the good and dump the bad.

We believe the memo didn’t reach Kamarul. ‎He lodged a police report against Hannah, accusing the DAP assemblyman for Subang Jaya of using her biography to convert Muslims to Christianity.

He bought her book, saying he was interested in what politicians did and what inspired them.

“I was surprised that the book is trying to persuade, influence and incite a non-Christian to convert to Christinaity,” he posted on his Facebook page.

He appeared upset that the book related how Hannah felt fortunate for being a Christian and how God is a loving, good and just God.

“All her stories have inadvertently inspired her readers, including me, to be awed by her God,” he said.

Got to feel some pity for this chap.

He bought a book titled Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey and is offended that chunks of it delve into what makes Hannah complete.

He bought an autobiography of someone who is not shy of sharing her faith and is offended because her stories have inspired him.

Got to feel some sorrow for this man.‎ And his students. – May 17, 2017.
