SELANGOR Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali is willing to give up his Gombak seat to Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the coming 14th general election.
The PKR deputy president said Dr Mahathir can take his seat as long as the party agrees.
Azmin also said later in a statement that Dr Mahathir can be a good candidate in Gombak due to its racial make up.
“Even though I won by a small margin of 52% of votes, this is a Malay majority seat and was a stronghold of Umno for many decades. I believe Dr Mahathir can pull more votes among Umno voters in GE14,” he said.
Dr Mahathir and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are PH’s choice for prime minister and deputy prime minister if the opposition coalitions wins federal power.
The former prime minister and Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, however, had said he was more inclined to contest in either Kubang Pasu, Langkawi or even in Putrajaya.
Selangor PKR had also objected to Dr Mahathir being named as prime minister candidate, alleging that it ran contradictory to the Reformasi movement.
Azmin currently holds the Bukit Antarabangsa state seat in Selangor and the Gombak parliamentary constituency.
His state seat is also the target of Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos who had previously said that he will challenge the Selangor menteri besar in any seat in Selangor, if he is picked by Umno to contest in GE14.
Jamal had also said that he would do a better job as menteri besar than Azmin. – January 13, 2018.
