DR Noor Hisham Abdullah’s call for healthcare volunteers on the Covid-19 frontlines was met with indignation over his failure to at least offer the sign-ups an allowance.

The director-general of health advertised for help today on Twitter with a volunteers wanted graphic for medical officers, dentistry officers, assistant medical officers, nurses and laboratory technicians.

It is stated that the volunteers will not receive any form of remuneration for their work, including transport, accommodation, food and allowance

“All costs for the duration of volunteer service must be borne by the applicant,” it read.

This drew protests from Twitter users who said the volunteers deserve some incentives.

“Cut the salaries of ministers, MPs, royalty and give it to volunteers,” said a @daryldeanna.

“Sorry, sir, while it is good to volunteer, those who help out also need something for transport, food and drink to stay alive,” tweeted a @fatahmzaki.

Others suggested that the health authority should instead seek the aid of retired healthcare professionals or get corporate sponsors to pay the volunteers an allowance.

Some people, however, wanted the critics to shut up because no one was being forced to volunteer.

The ministry also requires the volunteers to be willing to travel to where they are assigned to work.

Volunteers can fill out the form here or email [email protected]. – May 27, 2021.
