PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang reserved his scorn for Mahfuz Omar while describing the lawmaker’s departure from the Islamist party after 34 years.
Hadi made the analogy when asked by reporters to comment on the Pokok Sena MP’s decision to quit the party after 34 years in PAS.
Mahfuz, seen as snipping in the sidelines, has been critical of the party after the collapse of the former opposition pact, Pakatan Rakyat, triggered by PAS’ feud with DAP over amendments to shariah law.
After the end of the PR pact, a group progressive and pro-Pakatan leaders left to form a splinter party, Amanah, in 2015.
Mahfuz remained in the party to try to convince its leaders to work with the new opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan, whose members included Bersatu and Amanah.
The task was made harder after last year’s muktamar when conservatives won all the top party posts.
Mahfuz’s loyalty was questioned repeatedly by PAS members and on New Year’s Eve, the former Kedah PAS commissioner and a popular party vice-president confirmed his departure, saying his wife and daughter would join him.
PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin said on Tuesday Mahfuz was enjoying the wages of sin and was haram because he had broken “baiah” (loyalty oath).
All PAS candidates have to take an oath of loyalty to the party before being allowed to contest in any election.
Mahfuz’s resignation comes a little over a month after Kedah opposition leader and Anak Bukit assemblyman Amiruddin Hamzah left PAS for Bersatu. – January 4, 2018.

The arrogance and the chauvinism is with Hadi Awang himself.
