PAS has labelled Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar “haram” (proscribed) after his resignation from the party, effective yesterday.
PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin told NST Online that Mahfuz was “haram” from now until the next general election because he had broken “baiah” (loyalty oath).
PAS’s election candidates take the oath of loyalty to the party before they contest in the polls.
Hashim said Mahfuz should remember the oath he took and that he had to answer to Allah because his salary as Pokok Sena MP was deemed “haram” upon his departure from PAS.
He also said PAS was not affected by Mahfuz’s resignation nor did the Islamist party now consider him an enemy.
“The same applies to other former PAS leaders. Our door is always open to accept them back into the fold,” he was quoted as saying.
Mahfuz, a PAS veteran of 34 years, announced his resignation on New Year’s eve, a little over a month after Kedah opposition leader and Anak Bukit assemblyman Amiruddin Hamzah left PAS for Bersatu.
Mahfuz had been against PAS’s decision to end political ties with PKR and DAP, which were its allies in the now defunct opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat.
While many other progressive and pro-Pakatan leaders had quit PAS since 2015, Mahfuz had held on in the hope of convincing the party to turn around and work with new coalition Pakatan Harapan, which members include Bersatu and PAS splinter party Amanah.
Despite the PAS leadership’s animosity towards PH, Mahfuz had been turning up at PH events and even giving speeches at its ceramah, openly showing support for the opposition coalition helmed by Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Mahfuz has yet to announce which PH party he would join. – January 2, 2018.
