FORMER youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said today he will be based in Singapore for a month to pursue his studies in public policy.
The Muar MP said he had participated in online learning since last September for the executive course at the National University of Singapore. However, he is required to attend several physical classes in order to finish the course.
“I’m not going on holiday, but for studies.
“I hope my studies in ‘public policy’ will make me a better MP and policymaker for Muar and Malaysia,” he wrote on his Facebook page, adding the university had granted him a full scholarship to complete the programme.
While the date of his departure was not indicated, Syed Saddiq said he is voluntarily relinquishing his salary as an MP for the whole of March.
His March salary will be optimised for the Muar constituents throughout his stint in Singapore, he said.
He also said despite his month-long absence, his “team” will continue to serve his constituency in his stead.
“I don’t deserve to keep my salary while I further my studies.”
Syed Saddiq was appointed as the youth and sports minister under the Pakatan Harapan administration after the 2018 general election. At the age of 26, he made history as the youngest Malaysian to be appointed as a federal minister.
Prior to the appointment, Syed Saddiq was reported to have rejected scholarships to do a Masters in Public Policy from Oxford University in the United Kingdom twice, in 2017 and 2018.
Instead, he chose to pursue a political career by contesting in the 14th general election. – March 8, 2021.
