PAS postpones party polls to gear up for GE15

PAS has postponed its party elections this year and it annual gathering until after the next general election, said Takiyuddin Hassan.

The Islamist party’s secretary-general said the decision to postpone party elections, the 67ths in its history, is to allow it to focus on preparations for the 15th general election.

“PAS has decided that the muktamar will be held after GE15, doesn’t matter when. For now, we don’t even know when GE15 will be called but it is expected after the emergency is over.

“So, we take into consideration holding our muktamar after that,” Takiyuddin was quoted as saying by satellite news channel Astro Awani.

At its last party elections held in Kuantan in 2019, president Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, were returned without a contest.

Idris Ahmad, Mohamad Amar Nik Abdullah and Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar were elected as vice-presidents.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said he would call for a general election once the Covid-19 pandemic is under control.

Under the emergency proclamation, no general, state or by-elections can be held, unlike under normal circumstances where elections must be called for within 60 days once a seat is declared vacant.

The emergency is set to end on August 1. – March 7, 2021.
