MALAYSIAN squash queen Nicol David was crowned “The World Games Greatest Athlete of All Time” in a global online poll that ended at 9pm today.
The only Asian candidate, the eight-time squash world champion, received 318,943 votes to win by more than 200,000 votes against the nearest contender, the World Games said on its website.
The 37-year-old sports star from Penang, who reigned for a record nine years as the world number one squash player, outclassed 23 other athletes representing their respective sports in the poll.
“It was a surprise to see myself among these other top athletes and I’m grateful… hopefully it can elevate attention for the future of squash, and it’s a proud moment to represent my country and Asia,” Nicol said when commenting on her win.
Her closest rival was James Kehoe, who had represented Ireland in tug of war in nine World Games, with 113,120 votes, followed by powerlifter Larysa Soloviova of Ukraine with 80,790 votes and German Marcel Hassemeier (life-saving) with 79,760 votes.
The winners receive a trophy and a gift from the sponsor.
International World Games Association president Jose Perurena congratulated the winners, adding that Nicol is an inspiration and fine role model for the youth.
World Squash Federation president Zena Wooldridge said Nicol’s victory is recognition of a great career that saw her break numerous records and win all there was to win in the sport.
The poll was held in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the World Games, which was launched in Santa Clara, California, USA, in 1981. – Bernama, February 1, 2021.
