WATER supply in Klang Valley is expected to be restored in less than 24 hours, Water and Environment Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said today.

The Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Rantau Panjang water treatment plants were closed today after pollution was detected in Sg Selangor, leading to dry taps across large parts of the Klang Valley.

The cause of the pollution is under investigation.

Tuan Man told reporters at the Phase 1 Water Intake Plant the pollution could have been caused by nearby factories.

“There was an odour of solvents detected in Sg Selangor. The sample will be sent to the lab to identify the cause,” he told reporters during a visit to the Sg Selangor water treatment plant.

He assured consumers every effort was being made to speed up restoration of their water supply.

‘Insyaallah, water will return in 24 hours; the water treatment plants that were halted will resume operations in one or two hours.”

More than a million households and business premises in the Klang Valley are experiencing a water supply disruption for the second time in days.

Air Selangor corporate communications head Elina Baseri said at the Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Rantau Panjang water treatment facilities were closed early this morning to facilitate work to clean up the pollution.

The suspension of operations at the four plants caused unscheduled supply disruption for 1.2 million accounts in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang , Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.

“Air Selangor will provide tankers to the affected areas with priority for critical premises, such as hospitals and dialysis centres,” she said in a statement.
