PLANTATION Industries and Commodities Minister Khairuddin Aman Razali wants PAS to push for the sale of alcohol to be contained and a ban on gambling.
The PAS lawmaker said this should be among its goals now that the Islamist party is part of the federal government.
He said the government under Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership must not allow gambling because it is forbidden by each religion and causes trouble to humanity.
“No sane human who loves peace and harmony will like gambling.
“It is different from alcohol, some religions allow the consumption of alcohol and we give them the right but not gambling.
“This is a lie and a manipulation towards human’s weakness to manage their finances,” he said in an interview on a Facebook page, TV Pertiwi last night.
Khairuddin felt that the sale of alcohol must be discussed to stop Muslims from purchasing and driving under the influence of alcohol.
He said Malaysia can take the example from Singapore where there is a strict regulation on alcohol consumption although the state is led by non-Muslims.
“Singapore is governed by non-Muslims, but they do not allow alcohol to be sold openly because they see it as a problem,” he stated.
He explained that PAS will still allow alcohol to be on the market but the sale will be monitored and need further discussion.
“If it is harmful, alcohol must be banned from the marker. Depending on each religion because that is their rights, we will allow that because that is the rights given by Allah to other religions.
“Alcohol for the non-Muslims but we need to know how to sell it. Now it is open, Muslims can buy it and people drive under the influence, that is harmful,” he said.
His comment on alcohol was made when he was asked on PAS’ agenda after being part of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government for seven months.
PAS’ stance on alcohol is one of the issues is a mjor factor contributing to its unpopularity among non-Muslim voters.
Opposition to PAS in the issue erupted when the issue was raised by another member of the party last month, before the Sabah state election.
At that time, Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Nik Salleh in a Dewan Rakyat sitting claimed that the Bible was distorted to allow alcohol consumption.
The statement drew widespread criticism from non-Muslim groups and religious leaders in Sabah, who challenged the party to participate in the September 26 state election.
PAS did not participate in the election but one of its leaders was appointed as an assemblyman in the Sabah state assembly following Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s victory over Warisan Plus.
Khairuddin, however, is under the spotlight as he has not yet been charged in court for violating the mandatory quarantine order since returning from Turkey in July.
Khairuddin’s case is one of the matters pressing on Muhyiddin’s administration even though the prime minister has emphasised impartiality in such cases.
Anger over Khairuddin was widely seen on social media when several ordinary individuals were brought to court for similar offences. – October 11, 2020.
