FORMER attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has sent a letter of demand to the Attorney-General Chambers (AGC) claiming damages for wrongful termination.

In the letter, Apandi said he was unlawfully dismissed by the Pakatan Harapan administration in 2018.

“Yes it’s true I’ve sent the letter through my solicitors Messr Shukor Baljit & Partners,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

“Soon – as in within a week – if there is no response, I’ll proceed with a civil suit. The whole details will be stated there.”

Apandi told The Edge Markets today he was appointed as the A-G with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on July 27, 2015 for a term to last until July 26, 2018.

He said he was informed on April 6, 2018 that the king had consented to extend his appointment, beginning July 27, 2018.

He said he had accepted the extension via a letter dated May 7, 2018.

He said he was removed by then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, whom he accused of power abuse.

Apandi is claiming damages for loss of earnings, allowances and benefits to which he was entitled from July 27, 2018, to July 26, 2021.

A week after coming into office, Dr Mahathir announced Apandi was on leave, adding there had been complaints of wrongdoing filed against the former Federal Court judge.

In June 2018, Dr Mahathir proposed Tommy Thomas as Apandi’s replacement.

Thomas resigned on February 28 following the fall of the Pakatan Harapan administration. – October 1, 2020.
