We're not crossing over, say majority of Selangor reps

IT doesn’t look like the power grab that happened in Perak in 2009 is going to happen in Selangor, at least that is the conclusion to be drawn from a straw poll of the 42 elected representatives.

Ijok assemblyman Idris Ahmad said even if he were offered RM10 million, he would remain loyal to Pakatan Harapan.

The poll of Pakatan Harapan and PAS legislators was conducted by The Malaysian Insight following speculation that the Selangor government would fall, if several representatives crossed over to Barisan Nasional.

The source of the speculation is unclear but it started just after PAS leaders signalled their intention at the party congress last weekend to end ties with PKR. PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang fuelled the talk of a coup against the state government by saying that anything was possible.

Currently, the Selangor government is made up of 29 PH legislators and 13 PAS representatives. The remaining seats are held 11 BN legislators and two independent assemblymen. The Sungai Air Tawar seat is vacant following the death of BN assemblyman Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik.

In order for Selangor to fall, all the PAS lawmakers and three more from the PH side need to cross over to BN.

The Malaysian Insight team telephoned or messaged 41 lawmakers from the Selangor government to ask whether they would cross over.‎

There were replies from 12 of the 14 DAP legislators and 10 out of the 12 PKR lawmakers. Four out of 13 PAS representatives and one out of two Amanah representatives responded.

Below is the list of those who The Malaysian Insight contacted and their responses:

PAS (13)

  • Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (Sijangkang): I will be with PAS and the state government.
  • Noor Hanim Ismail (Sri Serdang): I support Pakatan Rakyat that was given the mandate by the voters in the 13th general election… not Pakatan Harapan which is not recognised in Selangor.
  • Hasbullah Mohd Ridzwan (Gombak Setia, PAS): By the grace of God, I will be steadfast with PAS and I support the state government.
  • Dr Abdul Rani Osman (Meru, PAS): No I won’t leave.
  • Iskandar Samad (Chempaka, PAS): No reply.
  • Khairuddin Othman (Paya Jaras, PAS): No reply.
  • Sallehen Mukhyi (Sabak, PAS): No reply.
  • Zaidy Abdul Talib (Taman Templer, PAS): No reply.
  • Khasim Abdul Aziz (Lembah Jaya): No reply.
  • Razaly Hassan (Dusun Tua): No reply.
  • Shafie Ngah (Bangi): No reply.
  • Dr Halimah Ali (Selat Kelang): No reply.
  • Mohd Haslin Hassan (Tanjung Sepat): No reply.

PKR (12)

  • Amirudin Shari (Batu Caves): No, I will stay (with the current government) and I’m confident that PAS, PKR, Amanah and DAP want to do the same.
  • Yaakob Sapari (Kota Anggerik): I am mandated by the voters to be with the government led by Azmin Ali.
  • Elizabeth Wong (Bukit Lanjan): No, I won’t quit the Selangor government.
  • Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Sri Setia): I will continue to serve the current state administration.
  • Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei (Sri Muda): It won’t happen because as far as I know, all the Pakatan Harapan legislators in Selangor are loyal to the MB’s leadership. The issue of a split doesn’t arise.
  • Idris Ahmad (Ijok): If people know me they would know I won’t leave this coalition government. I won’t leave Pakatan Harapan even if they offered me RM10 million or if PH loses the next election.
  • Haniza Mohamed Talha (Taman Medan): Everything is so normal and we are doing our work. Why would I leave when everything is good and people like and agree with what the government is doing?
  • Dr Xavier Jayakumar (Seri Andalas): I’m not going to do anything like that. We are the ruling government. Why would I do anything else? I think you people are speculating too much.
  • Gan Pei Nei (Rawang): No, I won’t.
  • Rodziah Ismail (Batu Tiga): I will remain in PKR, I won’t change.  It’s just a political game. I will be with PH and there’s no point in jumping parties.
  • Daroyah Alwi (Sementa): No reply.
  • Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (Kajang): A personal assistant said she’s overseas.

Amanah (2)

  • Saari Sungib (Hulu Kelang, Amanah): I am staying with PH which comprise PKR, DAP, PPBM and Amanah. (Save Malaysia and save Selangor.)
  • Hasnul Baharuddin (Morib): No reply.

DAP (14)

  • Lau Weng San (Kg Tunku): Not switching party.
  • V. Ganabatirau (Kota Alam Shah): I will never leave DAP in any situation.
  • Tan Pok Shyong (Pandamaran): I’m a true supporter of DAP. I will not leave the party for anything.
  • Lee Kee Hiong (Kuala Kubu Baru). No, I will not leave. I have nothing more say.
  • Yeo Bee Yin (Damansara Utama): The question of changing parties doesn’t arise all. I’m with DAP and I fully support the current Selangor government.
  • Tiew Way Keng (Teratai): Definitely not. I don’t know what BN is trying to do by creating this confusion.
  • Hannah Yeoh (Subang Jaya): No such thing. The other side cannot even name an opposition leader for Selangor, how are they going to form a government in Selangor?
  • Ng Swee Lim (Sekinchan): Clearly, no way I will go to the other side.
  • Ng Sze Han (Kinrara): No way. I’ll always stay with DAP. And I’m confident that my colleagues won’t cross either.
  • Ng Tien Chee (Balakong): No I won’t. I think it’s just part of the BN and Hadi ploy to mislead the public and give the impression that Selangor and Pakatan are unstable.
  • Lai Nyuk Lan (Sg Pelek): No I won’t jump. I have no issues with the current government.
  • Rajiv Rishyakaran (Bukit Gasing): Won’t change party.
  • Ean Yong Hian Wah (Seri Kembangan): No reply.
  • Teng Chang Khim (Sg Pinang): No reply.

The fact that some of the assemblymen didn’t reply to calls or text messages should not be taken as an indication of how they are leaning. Seven PAS legislators were part of the crowd who turned up at the airport on Friday to welcome Azmin.

Several legislators believe that it is a waste of time and effort responding to a rumour started and nurtured by BN.
