147 new virus cases, 3 deaths

Malaysia reported three Covid-19 deaths today, raising the number of fatalities from the coronavirus to 133.

There were 147 new infections in the last 24 hours, the first time daily cases hit the triple digits since September 8, when there were 100 new cases.

The National Security Council said 143 of the new cases were local transmissions.

The country has logged 10,505 confirmed cases, 770 of which are active.

At a press conference later, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said two of the three deaths were in Sabah.

One was of a 48 year-old woman with a history of diabetes and high blood pressure. She began showing symptoms such as fatigue, vomiting, cough and fever on September 14 before she was admitted to the Tawau Hospital on September 18 in a semi-conscious state.

She died the following day and was posthumously confirmed positive for Covid-19 yesterday.

The second death in Sabah was that of a 54-year-old man who was treated at the Semporna Hospital for fever, cough and breathing difficulties.

The third death was of a 72-year-old man who died at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital. He was linked to the Tawar cluster in Kedah,

Local transmissions

Sabah again contributed the highest number of new cases to the day’s tally, at 134.

Two of these were from a new cluster, called Udin, in Tawau.

The state now has eight active clusters, with the Benteng Lahad Datu prison cluster contributing the most cases at 105.

Other states that saw new local transmissions were Kedah (5), Selangor (2), Kelantan (1) and Kuala Lumpur (1).

Malaysians accounted for 115 of the locally transmitted cases.

Meanwhile, 39 patients were discharged from the hospital in the past 24 hours upon recovery.

The total number of recoveries from now stands at 9,602. – September 23, 2020.
