BARISAN Nasional has retained the Slim state seat by a majority of 10,945 votes.
At around 9pm, the Election Commission announced the official results, which showed BN’s Mohd Zaidi Aziz polling 13,060 votes over the 2,115 polled by independent candidate Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi from Pejuang.
Another independent, S. Santharasekaran, obtained 276 votes.
Voter turnout was at 68.4%, with 15,451 ballots cast.
Of these, 327 were rejected.
BN’s win was almost a foregone conclusion in the Perak seat it has held since 2004.
Its win also maintains the status quo in the state government, where the Perikatan Nasional government BN is part of has 33 out of 59 state seats.
It is also the seventh by-election victory for BN since the general election in May 2018.
The seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib, who died from a heart attack on July 15.
He was reported to have collapsed while playing golf at the Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort and was rushed to Bentong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. – August 29, 2020.
