HISHAMMUDDIN Hussein today said he has apologised to Parliament and paid a fine for vaping in the House last week.
The matter should not be politicised as there are more important matters for lawmakers to deal with, the foreign minister told the Dewan Rakyat.
“I have said that what is wrong is wrong, and I have admitted that I was wrong and I have apologised.
“On the fine, I have been compounded and I have paid the amount.
“If the Kluang MP wants to continue playing politics in Parliament, well, there is more work to be done here,” the Sembrong MP told Wong Shu Qi, who raised the matter.
Wong earlier asked Deputy Speaker Rashid Hasnon about the issue when Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof was replying to points raised during the debate on the royal address.
“What we want is an apology in Parliament.”
Hishammuddin said he has already apologised, and this should be sufficient.
The six-term Umno lawmaker was caught using an e-cigarette while a minister was replying to points raised in the royal address.
A nine-second clip shared on Twitter showed the 59-year-old Hishammuddin, seated behind Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong, taking a puff under his mask.
Under a ruling passed by the previous Pakatan Harapan administration, those found smoking in eateries and other prohibited areas face a RM250 fine starting January.
Failure to settle the compound can lead to charges in court, where offenders face a maximum fine of RM10,000 or two years’ jail. – August 10, 2020.
