IT IS now up to young Sabahans to restore integrity to politics in the upcoming state elections, said Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub.

“This is the time for young people to decide,” said the Pulai MP in Parliament today.

“Over the past week, politicians have become more like prostitutes where people change their positions overnight,” he said, adding that Sabahans must scrutinise the candidates carefully before they cast their ballots in the state elections.

“Look at their performance in legislative assembly and in the constituency. Don’t vote for those who are only looking to sell their vote after the elections.

“It’s now up to the youths to decide the future,” he added, remarking on the events in the Sabah Assembly last week, where 13 assemblymen from various parties such as PKR, DAP and Warisan suddenly opted to back former chief minister Musa Aman to topple the state government.

After he was acquitted of 46 corruption charges on June 9, Musa announced on July 29 that he had “enough numbers” to form a new state government in Sabah.

“I wish to (announce) that Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin and the prime minister’s political secretary Nardin Awang have met the Sabah governor Juhar Mahiruddin to inform him that the state coalition has a sufficient majority to form a new state government,” said Musa.

However, unlike the states that switched sides on the peninsula following the fall of Pakatan in February, Sabah Governor Juhar decided not to let Musa proceed on the basis of statutory declarations, agreeing instead to Chief Minister Shafie Apdal’s request to dissolve the assembly.

Sabah is expected to hold elections by October or within 60 days of the dissolution of the state assembly. – August 3, 2020.
