THE Sabah state assembly has been dissolved to pave way for fresh elections, said caretaker Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal today.

Shafie said he had advised governor Juhar Mahiruddin to dissolve the assembly during a meeting this morning.

He added that Juhar had consented to his request for the dissolution.

He said he had submitted a letter requesting the dissolution last night.

“I have asked Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri to dissolve state assembly.

“According to the law, the chief minister has the right to ask for the dissolution of the state assembly.

“Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri has consented to dissolution of the state assembly,” he said during a press conference in Kota Kinabalu this morning.

The dissolution puts an end to hopes by former chief minister Musa Aman to form a new state government after he said he had a simple majority.

Shafie said he is now the caretaker chief minister until the elections that will be held within 60 days.

Earlier, he held a closed-door meeting with Warisan reps and other members of his ruling coalition.

Musa, meanwhile, is expected to call for a press conference soon. – July 30, 2020.
