Immigration Dept revokes work permit of Bangladeshi in Al Jazeera report

THE Immigration Department has revoked the work permit of Bangladeshi Md Rayhan Kabir, who was interviewed by international news agency Al Jazeera, Harian Metro reports.

The matter was confirmed by Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.

“Therefore, he has to surrender before being deported back to his country of origin,” he was quoted as saying.

On Tuesday, the Immigration Department said that they are looking for a Bangladeshi man featured in the controversial documentary by Al Jazeera, which is now being investigated for sedition.

The department identified the man as Rayhan, 25, and his last-known address was a company on Jalan Loke Yew, Kuala Lumpur.

They are seeking his assistance into investigations under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Al Jazeera’s 25-minute documentary, Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown, alleged Putrajaya has discriminated against undocumented migrants amid the virus crisis.

Health Minister Dr Adham Baba slammed the accusations made in the documentary, saying actions taken under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 are meant to protect both locals and foreigners from Covid-19.

Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin was equally disparaging of the Qatari network, which he said sensationalised the issue, while Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob demanded an apology from the network.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said the news report gave an inaccurate account of how the government had been managing the outbreak, while painting a very bad image of the country. – July 12, 2020.
