MONDAY is a do-or-die Parliament session for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, said Khalid Abdul Samad today.

“If he succeeds in replacing Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusoff, it means he has sufficient support.

“But if he doesn’t, Ariff can allow a motion of no confidence against him.”

Speaking on the sidelines of an Amanah leaders’ retreat, Khalid said it is the first-ever attempt to replace a speaker after a change of government without elections being held.

“This is historic, as no speaker has ever been changed in the Westminster system midway through a Parliament term.

“The excuse given by the prime minister, that there is a better candidate, is weak.”

The Shah Alam MP said the move to replace the speaker is just a ploy to vacate the Election Commission chairman’s post.

“I think it’s just an excuse for PN to replace the speaker with someone who is friendlier to them.”

He said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, along with sacked Bersatu MPs and Parti Warisan Sabah, will work with Pakatan Harapan as the opposition in Parliament.

“We will coordinate on how to face the different motions and laws.”

Khalid, who is also Amanah communications director, added that the party retreat is timely as it needs to prepare its leaders and machinery for the possibility of snap polls.

“We haven’t met as much as we wanted to due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, we thought this would be a good time to listen to feedback from various leaders and prepare for the possibility of snap elections.” – July 11, 2020.

  • I dont believe anything will happen. PH are paralysed by jostling for positions of power after losing due to some politicians greed for power by any means. Now TDM is splitting the opposition again. Old habits die hard but it is the country that suffers.
