BARBERS and hairdressers have welcomed Putrajaya’s decision to allow them to resume business from June 10.

Malaysian Indian Hairstylist Empowerment Association (Mihass) president Mohd Jaafar Salim Thamby said members were also informed that they are allowed to provide facial treatments and shampooing, in addition to haircuts.

“We welcome the decision and everyone is happy with the announcement.

“It is much safer now because there are standard operating procedures (SOPs) to follow,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob earlier today announced that barbers, hairstylists and beauty salons could resume operations but under conditions.

Beauty salons are also allowed to provide manicures and pedicures.

The SOPs include social distancing, use of face masks, gloves and hand sanitiser, temperature checks and face shields for children.

Services should also be provided on an appointment basis.

Bumiputera Hairdressers Association (Buha) president Bambang Soteto said the SOPs are strict but welcomed them nevertheless.

“I’ve had to close all of my eight branches in the last three months but I am happy we are now allowed to open.

“Even though the rules are strict, I am grateful.”

Last month, Ismail said hairstylists were not allowed to make house calls while the conditional movement control order (CMCO) was in effect.

The CMCO is due to expire on June 9. Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is set to make an announcement tomorrow.

Today, Ismail Sabri said house calls are allowed and even encouraged to reduce the risk of crowding at barber shops and salons.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Indian Hair Dressing Salon Owners Association (Mindas) vice-president Ganathiban Murugan thanked the government for allowing hairdressers to resume business.

“We had severe financial troubles when we were not allowed to operate for three months but now, we would like to thank the government for this consideration.

“We will follow the SOP and we will make sure our members follow the rules.” – June 6, 2020.
