TWO ministers are expected to quit today and declare their support for former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, reports Harian Metro.
The newspaper said it is believed that more cabinet members will follow suit.
If this proves true, it would be a major blow to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and possibly lead to the collapse of his fledgling Perikatan Nasional government.
“At least two ministers (will quit today). After this, more will follow,” the Bahasa Malaysia daily quoted sources as saying.
The report did not name the ministers.
It has been speculated for a week that at least two cabinet members from Bersatu will switch to party founder Dr Mahathir’s side.
Yesterday, Shahruddin Md Salleh quit as deputy works minister and met Dr Mahathir shortly afterwards.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof is set to hold a press conference at his residence later today, fuelling talk that he will announce his resignation.
Shahruddin and Redzuan had been due to hold pressers last Friday, believed to announce their resignations, but they did not materialise.
Redzuan had said he was under self-quarantine at home, but both he and Shahruddin paid a visit to Dr Mahathir earlier that day.
Things got heated in Bersatu after letters were issued to Dr Mahathir and four other MPs, saying their memberships have been terminated due to their support for Pakatan Harapan.
The five have insisted that they are still members.
A supreme council meeting last night endorsed and formalised their loss of membership.
It also endorsed Muhyiddin as prime minister and Bersatu president. – June 5, 2020.
