COVID-19 cases in Malaysia surged to triple digits with 172 new infections reported today, of which 112 were detected at Immigration detention centres, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
This brings the national number of infections to 7,417.
A total of 159 of the new cases involved foreigners, of which 112 cases were detected at the three Immigration detention centres in Semenyih, Sepang and Bukit Jalil.
Meanwhile, 34 people have recovered and have been discharged from hospital as of noon today.
This brings the total number of recoveries to 5,979, translating into 80.61% of the cumulative total of infections.
No fatalities were reported, keeping the death toll at 115.
Earlier today, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced all undocumented migrants, from three immigration centres, who are positive for Covid-19 will be housed at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).
He said Malaysians at MAEPS had been transferred to Sungai Buloh Hospital.
He said there are 4,342 migrants at the three immigration centres.
“There are 1,654 people in Semenyih, 1,334 in Bukit Jalil and 1,358 in Sepang.
“The public does not have to worry because the immigration centres are in lockdown.
“The migrants and immigration officers will be screened and those infected will be sent to MAEPS,” he said at the ministry’s daily press conference in Putrajaya today. – May 25, 2020.
