THE Transport Ministry is looking at making a jail sentence mandatory for those caught drink-driving, said Wee Ka Siong today.

“If we need to make an amendment to the Road Transport Act 1987, we will do it. A mandatory prison sentence probably would give awareness to those who intend to drive after being drunk.

“If the mandatory prison sentence is enacted, then the court has no choice but to sentence them.”

Such laws would need to be discussed with the Attorney-General’s Chamber, said the transport minister.

Wee’s comments come after a suspected drunk driver lost control of his vehicle and ran it over a police officer manning a roadblock at the Kajang-Seremban Highway yesterday.

In the 2.11am incident, Safwan Muhammad Ismail, 31, from the Kajang district police headquarters died at the scene from serious body and head injuries after the Toyota Hilux rammed into him.

Wee advised Malaysians consuming alcohol not to drive and use e-hailing services instead.

“In Malaysia, there is no reason one should drive after getting drunk. We have almost 12,000 e-hailing drivers. If they want to drink and get drunk, use this service,” he said after visiting the Bukit Bintang MRT station. – May 4, 2020.
