FIFTY-EIGHT individuals have been found guilty and jailed as the authorities come down hard on those violating the movement control order (MCO), said Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Ismail Sabri said the 58 are being placed in 11 Prison Department academies, which are being used as temporary prisons.
The defence minister told a press conference today that 11 out of 13 academies have already started receiving inmates.
“Fifty-eight people have been sent to the temporary prisons to serve their sentences. Out of 13 prisons academies, 11 have started operations,” Ismail Sabri said.
Since March 18, he said the police had detained 19,434 individuals for breaching the MCO.
He also said yesterday that the police had detained 386 people, where 332 were remanded while 54 others were released on bail.
Previously, Bukit Aman CID director Huzir Mohamed told reporters the police would no longer tolerate violators after the third phase of MCO was imposed last week.
He had said many of those arrested were unable to provide a reasonable explanation as to why they were out during the MCO.
“A total of 3,627 people were picked up during phase one, while 11,295 people were arrested during phase two.” – April 25, 2020.
