PAS votes to cut ties with PKR

PAS has accepted a motion to cut ties with PKR, ending months of strained relations with its long-time political ally.

The motion, which was tabled by a representative of the Ulama wing, Zulkifli Ismail, was accepted unanimously by the delegates at its 63rd muktamar.

“We propose a motion on Tahaluf Siyasi (political cooperation) between PAS and PKR to be ended, subject to the decision of Shura Council in accordance to the provisions in the PAS constitution,” said Zulkifli, when tabling the motion.

The final decision on the motion must be endorsed by the party’s Shura Council.

Among reasons cited for ending the cooperation were PKR’s support towards splinter party, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) in the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections and PKR’s failure to support RUU355, which was tabled by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in Parliament to enhance punishments meted out by shariah courts, Zulkifli said.

The motion was seconded by Pasir Mas PAS, Ahmad Fadlhli Shaari who is also the party’s Youth vice-chief. It was also accepted unanimously.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had said PAS would have to relinquish all its post in the Pakatan Harapan government if it persisted in cutting off relations with PKR. These included the three exco posts and the scores of village chief posts throughout Selangor.

PAS Youth chief Mohd Khalil Abdul Hadi said the party’s excos in the Selangor government need not resign their posts in the event of a split with PKR as it was not PKR which handed out the posts. – April 30, 2017.

  • PAS will forever be a sole party, history repeats again. Dulu PAS- Umno, then PAS- PKR-DAP, failed coalition. PAS has its own ego to wrestle.
