THERE has been no cases of Covid-19 infection detected among the people who attended a large-scale Hindu festival in Teluk Bahang on March 8, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.
He said the state Health Deparment had been monitoring the devotees who were at the Masi Magam Theppa Thirunal (Floating Chariot Festival) at the Sri Singamuga Kaliamman Temple.
“According to feedback from the state Health Department no cases have been reported to date,” he said during a media conference on that was livestreamed on Facebook today.
The March 8 celebration saw more than 30,000 people thronging the temple to take part in prayer sessions and and other religious rituals.
The highlight of the festival was a floating chariot bearing the deity of Sri Singamuga Kaliamman to the sea at night.
Devotees later lined the beach to welcome the return of the chariot about 10pm.
The packed event drew controversy as news emerged that an participant in a February 27 tabligh gathering in Kuala Lumpur had tested positive for Covid 19.
As reports of more infection among the Muslim congregation surfaced, the Malaysian Hindu Sangam had advised those who had attended the Hindu event to get themselves screened for the coronavirus.
Penang has reported 66 cases of infection and one death. The dead man had attended the tabligh assembly.
Yesterday Malaysia reported 212 new infections, bringing the total to 1,518. Of the new cases, 123 were from the tabligh cluster.
The death toll for Covid-19 in Malaysia also climbed to 14 yesterday, with three more fatalities. – March 24, 2020.
