Army may be deployed if people ignore restriction order, says Ismail Sabri

Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob says compliance with the restricted movement order was still at about 60% to 70%. – screen grab, March 19, 2020.

THE government may deploy the army if people do not comply with the restricted movement order, said Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The defence minister said only about 60% of Malaysians are complying with the order that came into effect yesterday.

“If we have no choice, if compliance remains at 60% or 70%, then I believe that there’s a big possibility that the army will be used,” he said at a press conference in Putrajaya  that broadcast live today.

Police yesterday started advising people to remain indoors during the two-week restricted movement order, which has been put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Ismail Sabri also said police carried out more than 500 roadblocks and checked at least 6,000 vehicles yesterday, the first day of the restriction order.

“For the first two or three days, police will advise people stopped at roadblocks to stay at home.

“After that, they will change from advice to action if the public does not comply with the order, ” he said. – March 19, 2020.
