BURGERS, foot-long sausages, waffles, milkshakes and a jukebox cranking out classic hits – you get all this and more at Ed’s Diner.
This retro Americana eatery at Resorts World Genting is a UK franchise that has been around since 1987, with 15 outlets in Britain.
Its red, black and white interior, neon signs, milkshake station and vintage jukebox that plays chart-toppers from the 1950s to 1970s – think James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen and Otis Redding – take diners back in time.
The menu offers American favourites in American portions, so there’s definitely enough to go around.
The generous Nachos to Share (RM39) comes heaped with chicken chili con carne, guacamole, tomato salsa and sour cream.
Crunchy tortilla chips are slathered in the spicy chili, with guacamole and sour cream providing a cool balance. On the side are sliced pickled jalapenos, gherkins and onions to give each bite a tart lift.
The Love Me Tenders (RM38) are fried chicken tenders (the narrow strip of meat under the breast) served with onion rings, cheese fries, macaroni and a tub of ranch dressing made with BBQ sauce, sour cream, mayonnaise and cilantro.
This is fried chicken I like – meat that is fried in a spiced batter, and stays crispy and juicy.
The Big Ed’s Burger (RM35) is nothing short of a feast: two 150g beef patties, streaky beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and gherkins stacked between sesame seed buns, drizzled with mustard and finished with Ed’s burger sauce.
It’s a burger that feeds two, even three people. The smoky streaky beef and meaty patties are the best part.
The Nashville Hot (RM19) is a chicken burger with lashings of hot sauce and mayonnaise, and layered with cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion rings.
If this isn’t spicy enough, go for the Nashville Super Hot, which has cili padi in its sauce. You can also swap out the chicken with beef for this burger.
The bestseller here is the Chicken ‘n’ Waffle (RM24), which has deep-fried chicken stacked between pieces of vanilla waffle. The tower is drizzled with honey and dusted with icing sugar.
Simultaneously sweet and savoury, the meat, with its wonderfully crackly skin, is a standout.
Then, there’s the Classic Foot-Long with chicken (RM31) or beef (RM33) sausage, crispy onions and gherkins, finished off with streaks of mustard and ketchup.
We shared a Chicken Caesar Salad (RM18), which has slices of grilled chicken thigh, romaine lettuce and cherry tomatoes topped with croutons and shaved parmesan. A tangy Caesar dressing ties everything together.
Those with a sweet tooth will find it hard to resist the milkshakes here. We fell in love with the lightly sweet Peanut Butter Deluxe Shake (RM24) and Buko Coconut Pandan Cake (RM28).
The latter is an impressive construction of pandan ice cream, coconut pandan jelly, palm sugar, love letters and whipped cream. Undeniably Malaysian, this beverage/dessert is a textural delight.
The Strawberry Donut (RM28), meanwhile, is a striking ensemble of strawberry ice cream, fresh strawberries, a mini strawberry donut, fruit loops and love letters.
Ed’s Diner at Genting is the only pork-free outlet outside Britain, with its halal status pending.
Manager Mohd Fauzan, sous chef Hapizi Hussain and chef Zulkifli Nayan trained for two months with the master franchisor in Britain before opening the outlet.
The restaurant is open from 11am to 10pm on weekdays, and till 11pm on weekends. Call +603-6101-1118 or visit www.rwgenting.com. – March 14, 2020.
