Just dissolve Parliament, say dissatisfied Umno leaders

MUHYIDDIN Yassin’s new government is in danger of collapsing as several Umno leaders dissatisfied with the Cabinet posts’ distribution called for Parliament to be dissolved for snap polls.

The Umno Supreme Council met earlier today, and the agenda included the new Perikatan Nasional (PN) government with Muhyiddin as prime minister and the party’s role in the Cabinet.

“Most of the members, however, feel we need to do something so that Umno is strong again.

“Maybe it’s a good idea for Parliament to be dissolved,” Supreme Council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman told reporters after the meeting.

The Pasir Salak MP said the people’s perception of Umno has dropped since the party joined the Perikatan Nasional government.

“Bersatu was given the rural and regional development and agriculture posts while we got defence. How can we help rural folk?

“This is unbalanced and will affect Umno’s political position in the country,” he said.

Earlier today, the Barisan Nasional committee also held a meeting at the Umno headquarters in the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Tajuddin said although Umno and Bersatu are in the same government, they were still rivals.

“Bersatu wants to strengthen its party but so does Umno. If we don’t strengthen ourselves, we will lose in the next general election.”

Tajuddin also criticised Muhyiddin’s decision to make former PKR deputy Mohamed Azmin Ali the Cabinet’s de facto No. 2.

“This is not a good sign and Umno doesn’t like it. This is a continuation of the Bersatu agenda and maybe more.

“We don’t want to be left behind as there is political interest,” Tajuddin added.

Earlier today, another veteran Umno leader, Shahrir Samad, said the Perikatan “en bloc” spirit was not reflected in Muhyiddin’s cabinet appointments.

He said that although PN had backed Muhyiddin, the new prime minister had ignored this.

“The cabinet positions were decided, not through negotiation, but by his own discretion, although he came to power with the support of BN and PAS,” the former Johor Baru MP said.

Former minister Azalina Othman Said also criticised Muhyiddin’s cabinet line-up, tweeting: “In honouring the spirit of a coalition partnership, don’t we (Umno) deserve a fairer deal?

“Simple maths regarding coalition representation is Bersatu (28%) = 1PM + 2 Senior Ministers. Umno (35%) = 1 Senior Minister.” – March 12, 2020.
