THE Kuala Lumpur High Court decided today not to cite Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for contempt after the Umno president failed to produce a letter from the Prime Minister’s Department, which required him to attend a meeting with Muhyiddin Yassin.

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah accepted Zahid’s apology for not bringing the letter which required him to attend a meeting over cabinet appoints.

He accepted Zahid’s explanation that there was a misunderstanding when the defence counsels communicated a request to vacate yesterday’s trial.

The judge, however, warned that the court would not tolerate any attempt to mislead it again.

Earlier, Zahid apologised from the accused dock.

“I am sorry. I did not intend to mislead the court. I have the most utmost respect for the judge and this honourable court.”

He said the Muhyiddin aide whom he spoke to yesterday was not a political secretary as no appointments have been made yet, therefore, no letter could be produced.

Deputy public prosecutor Rozela Raja Toran objected to Zahid’s explanation, calling them lies.

“Yesterday, he said he had the letter but now he says the letter could not be issued.

“He was on record as saying the letter was sent to him. The accused is again making up stories. There was never a meeting scheduled with the prime minister.”

Yesterday, Zahid said he met Muhyiddin’s political secretary at 12.45pm as the prime minister had already departed for Muar, Johor, by then.

Zahid, 67, is accused of receiving bribes for approving passport chip supply contracts to several private firms. He faces 47 criminal charges, including 27 counts of money-laundering. – March 3, 2020.

  • The judge is sympathetic to Zahid for obvious reasons. Crooked Zahid is now part of the government.
