Azmin’s loyalists in PKR now regret supporting him, says Anwar

PKR leaders loyal to ex-deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali did not know of his plot to form a back-door government with other parties, Anwar Ibrahim said today.

The party president said this was what Azmin’s loyalists have told him.

He also said certain MPs and state assemblymen who were in Azmin’s faction now regret supporting the Gombak MP in the past.

“They told me they did not know about the back-door deal. They were disappointed because they were not privy to the matter.

“They said they had no idea about this back-door deal, so we cannot blame them,” Anwar told the press at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya after chairing a meeting.

“They told me that they felt cheated and that nobody told them about this conspiracy to topple this (Pakatan Harapan) government,” Anwar added.

Azmin and former PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin were sacked from the party last week over a plot with Bersatu under Muhyiddin Yassin, Umno and PAS to form a new government.

Muhyiddin was sworn in as Malaysia’s 8th prime minister this morning after claiming the support of the majority of MPs in Parliament.

This is being disputed by Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the remaining PH parties, PKR, DAP and Amanah, and MPs from other parties or independents who have rejected a government with Umno and PAS in it.

Anwar said he is now working to quell the frustration among PKR members angry with Azmin’s camp and his supporters.

He said he regrets today’s incident at the party headquarters, where some PKR members attacked and abused Chua Tian Chang, Amirudin Shari and Afif Bahardin, who are known Azmin loyalists.

Chua was heckled and punched as he was escorted to his car.

Amirudin, who is Selangor menteri besar, and Afif, the Seberang Jaya assemblyman, were jeered and mocked.

Others who had been in Azmin’s camp, PKR women’s chief Haniza Talha and her deputy Daroyah Alwi are still inside the building and are reportedly waiting for the crowd outside to disperse before leaving.

Meanwhile, PKR parliamentary whip Johari Abdul said the party will lodge a police report against Muhyiddin “for lying to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the support of MPs”.

Johari also said PKR members should be ready for a snap election if Muhyiddin does not have the support of the majority of MPs in Dewan Rakyat. – March 1, 2020.

  • This is why you will never be PM, you are an apologist and a "diplomat", waiting for things to be handed to you, the fact is, even if this coup didn't take place this week, in all likelihood it would have happened even if Tun wanted to keep his word to handover to you end of this year, as clearly you do not have the support of Warisan and PPBM, Warisan only returned when Tun returned.

  • I think PKR needs fresh leaders. How about Rafizi and Nurul? Old ones have clearly failed not only the party but the nation.
