Muhyiddin is Bersatu’s choice for PM

BERSATU has nominated Muhyiddin Yassin as its prime minister candidate, Marzuki Yahya said today.

The party secretary-general said all Bersatu MPs agreed for Muhyiddin, who is party president, to be the candidate.

“We will forward his name to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for his consideration,” said Marzuki in a brief statement after the party met for three hours in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said the meeting was attended by 36 MPs.

It is unclear if the 36 includes Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The party has 26 MPs and the remaining MPs who attended are believed to the independents aligned to Mohamed Azmin Ali.

Mahathir, who is party chairman, chaired the meeting with the party’s lawmakers this morning.

The meeting, which started at 10am, is believed to have discussed the country’s political crisis, and whether Bersatu will rejoin Pakatan Harapan.

On Monday, the party announced its exit from the coalition. – February 28, 2020.
