PAS will deploy its volunteer units to help flood-hit areas in Penang, after the northern state led by its political enemy DAP was hit with incessant heavy rain and typhoon-like winds.

Penang PAS commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff instructed the party’s Unit Amal, Khidmat Malaysia and Briged Muslimat, to organise its members to help with flood relief work.

“I want all PAS areas that are affected by the floods to open operation rooms to coordinate flood relief work,” he said in a statement today, adding that the party will also work with the authorities, such as the Fire and Rescue Department as well as Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) to help the situation in Penang.

He said the party has also launched a donation drive to deliver essential items such as rice, sugar and cooking oil to the flood victims.

PAS’ splinter party, Amanah, has also opened an operations and service centre to assist flood victims with the help of party members, supporters and volunteers.

“The flash flood disaster in Penang and several areas in the south of Kedah demands all parties to work together to assist the victims,” said party president Mohamad Sabu this morning.

“I have instructed all members, supporters and the party’s volunteer team ARiF to deploy their aid teams as soon as possible and work together with the Penang and federal agencies to overcome this disaster.”

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also DAP secretary-general, said almost 2,000 people have been evacuated.

DAP and Amanah are in the same opposition coalition, Pakatan Harapan, while PAS which was formerly allies with DAP cut ties in 2015.

Mohamad said he had contacted the Penang Amanah welfare, national humanity and natural disaster bureaus to coordinate the aid missions.

He said Amanah was taking contributions through the Wanita Amanah Nasional – Tabung Awan Peduli (Maybank account 564892124605), stating that donors can WhatsApp #Pray4Penang and proof of their contributions to 01135049017 or email to [email protected]
