KHAIRUL Azwan Harun has urged Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commissioner (MACC) Latheefa Koya to resign after it released audio recordings of an alleged conspiracy to manipulate high-level government information on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal in 2016.
In a statement, the Barisan Nasional senator, popularly known as Azwan Bro, said the MACC’s action was unlawful.
Khairul also urged that Latheefa be referred to a Parliamentary Select Committee for damaging the credibility and reputation of the MACC.
“The statements and assumptions made by Latheefa at the press conference were a mere act of political drama.
“In fact, her actions were disgraceful and hurt my reputation.
“I also strongly deny that I was involved in any form of conspiracy, as stated at the press conference,” he said.
Khairul Azwan’s name was mentioned in the 2016 recording of Rosmah Mansor’s conversation with former prime minister Najib Razak while they were discussing then MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamed.
Khairul Azwan said that he agreed with the Malaysian Bar that the MACC should not have made the recordings of private conversations, involving Najib, his wife and other high-profile individuals, public.
Latheefa had, in releasing the audio clips, said the conversations pointed to “serious power abuse, criminal conspiracy, obstruction of justice and compromising national security”.
She had said it was up to judges to determine the admissibility of the recordings as evidence should the matter be brought to court.
The conversations involved alleged plans to manipulate high-level government information and requests by Najib to resolve certain issues involving money linked to 1MDB. – January 10, 2020.
