No basis for me to take polygraph test, says Anwar

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says a polygraph test is useless in the absence of witness statements, as well as details such as the time and place of an incident. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, January 8, 2020.

ANWAR Ibrahim has rejected a need for him to undergo a polygraph test as part of the ongoing police investigation into a sexual complaint filed against him by a former staffer.

“There is no basis. There must be evidence and a need for it,” the PKR president told reporters after addressing an international conference in Kuala Lumpur.

He also said that the police had not sought him to undergo the test.

He added that such a test was useless in the absence of witness statements as well as details such as the time and place of an incident.

“If I accuse you of robbing, and ask you to undergo a polygraph test, that doesn’t make sense. There must be a basis in doing it.

“Why create an issue? You also understand the principles of law and justice. Any allegation, if there is no basis, you cannot get the person to be on the defensive,” said the Port Dickson MP.

Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, a former research assistant at Anwar’s office, had accused the latter of sexually assaulting him in October 2018.

He made the claim in early December last year, and following a police report lodged by him, he was summoned to Bukit Aman on December 17 for a polygraph test.

Yusoff has also asked for Anwar to be subjected to the test.

Anwar had been questioned by the police, who had also visited his Bukit Segambut house as part of their investigations.

The matter is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which deals with using criminal force to outrage a person’s modesty.

Police have yet to release the results of the test on Yusoff but have since referred the matter to Attorney-General Tommy Thomas.

Meanwhile, Anwar today said he knew the people behind the allegations against him.

“I know the game. I know some of the players using these people. Let the police deal with it.

“Unlike many other cases, I have volunteered (to the police) to do it fast, and invited them to the house, and I went to see them at the police headquarters.” – January 8, 2020.

  • That's a strong point here, what's the evidence of taking a polygraph for an allegation by one individual? What is sexually assaulting? Sooooo... wide as a verbal term. What does he mean? How can a real young man be assaulted simply by another weak man(70 yrs old)? It has no logic, why should anyone be further questioned on this weak base allegation?
