The Malaysian Insight

MORE than half of Malaysians polled picked Nurul Izzah Anwar ahead of former international trade minister Mustapa Mohamed to be the next education minister.

According to an online poll by The Malaysian Insight, 52.2%, or 775 respondents, preferred that the 39-year-old Permatang Pauh MP take over from Maszlee Malik, who resigned yesterday.

Nurul, a three-term MP in Lembah Pantai and Permatang Pauh, is currently a member of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and headed the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) task force after the 2018 general election.

The poll, which ran yesterday, found Mustapa in a distant second with 12.7%, or 188 votes, of respondents favouring him.

Mustapa, who joined Bersatu in 2018, is a veteran minister, having headed the International Trade and Industry Ministry (2009-2018), Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry (2008-2009) and Higher Education Ministry (2006-2008).

Prior to that, Mustapa also served as second finance minister (1998-1999) and entrepreneur development minister (1995-1999).

The 69-year-old currently heads Parliament’s select committee on Budget.

Coming in third was Foreign Affairs Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, who garnered 6.5% (96 votes) of the vote.

The poll also had National Higher Education Fund Corporation chairman and former IDEAS CEO Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Bersatu) in fourth place with 2.8% (42).

Bersatu deputy president and Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir placed fifth with 2.3% or 34 votes.

A total of 1,486 respondents took part in the overnight poll by The Malaysian Insight. – January 3, 2020.

  • T M I. Please don't try to force upon people to agree to yr selection whereas in the first instance she doesn't have the academic credentials to be a Minister even. It's best she serves the PermatangPauh constituency and nothing more because that's her maximum capability.

  • Nurul is too soft. She'll not be able to handle it. Rafidah Aziz will be the most suitable candidate to be the Minister of Education. She's tough and has vision of how to bring Malaysia to be on par with developing countries.

    • She is totally loyal to Mahathir and is his greatest defender. You wouldnt want her in cabinet because she will create more chaos blindly defending her master.

  • Its a Bersatu portfolio so it must be replaced with another Bersatu candidate. nurul and Saifuddin are from PKR.

  • What? The cry baby MP for Education Minister??!! That is nonsense. Remember, Nurul was the MP who voluntarily resigned her PKR VP post, resigned her TVET Head position and resigned her Penang PKR Divisional head postion - all because she was upset and unhappy with the way the PH government was run.. She was not happy with the decisions by the Prime Minister.
Now, she wants to go back to the same PH government that she condemned before? How selfish can she be? What a hypocrite..

    • Nurul has more brains than most people and very highly educated. She resigned because she did not like Mahathir acting arbitrarily. She called him a dictator. She was right. Not many AB carriers in UMNO , BN or PH can have the guts to do that-she is an admirable young lady!

  • Ordinary Nurul A, would be a fantastic pick but in view of the fact that her father Anwar Ibrahim will be the next PM and her mother is now DPM-it wont be right. Rafidah Aziz aka Ms P is NEVER a good choice. We must never invite those who were in UMNO for the past 30 plus years. Rafidah, LIke Saifudah and the other are all very, very BAD choices. Malaysia needs smart people not jackasses who over the past 40 over years brought Malaysian education to being one of the WORST in SE Asia. Let PH chose, and NOT BERSATU-we want our children to be united. Bersatu is a racist party and soon should be forgotten if Malaysia is truly a democracy. Racism has no place in Malaysia.
