THE Education Ministry today denied allegations of Islamisation over its approval for Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) to carry out “dakwah”, or missionary activities in schools and universities.
The ministry’s denial follows the leaking of an official letter to the state education directors granting permission for missionary work to be attempted by Rakan Siswa Yadim in the country’s learning institutions.
MCA president Wee Ka Siong had shared the letter stating that “dakwah” would be allowed in “schools, teacher education institutes, polytechnics, community colleges, public universities and selected private universities in Malaysia”.
In a statement today, the ministry said the “dakwah” efforts would not involve non-Muslims.
It said the setting up of Rakan Siswa Yadim was subjected to permission from the respective institutions and schools and participation would be limited to Muslim students who volunteer.
“The Education Ministry would like to stress that this is not Islamisation and does not involve non-Muslim students as well as SJK(C), SJK(T) and missionary schools.
“The ministry guarantees that Rakan Siswa Yadim will be responsible for obeying existing rules and the freedom of religion for non-Muslim students.
“Schools are also asked to monitor the activities to ensure that it does not involve non-Muslim students,” it said in a statement today.
The ministry said it viewed the leaking of the letter seriously as it could “cause misunderstanding”.
“The ministry would like to inform that the letter is an administrative document between the Education Ministry and education institutions to encourage leadership programmes among students.” – December 24, 2019.
