THE British were not colonialist as alleged by many as they were brought in to help develop Malaya, said Mohammed Hanif Omar.

The former inspector-general of police said the British were invited by the Malay rulers into the country to help with its development.

“Many don’t know about the British. They thought the British were colonialists, they were not. They came in with the invitation from the Malay sultanates with the intention to develop the states. All states except Johor.

“The sultan of Johor gave Singapore to the British. The British didn’t help develop Johor because Johor brought in people from China and Indonesia. The rest all asked for help from the British,” he told the press after the anti-communist rally at Padang Merbok today

Hanif, who was the fourth IGP from 1974 to 1994, said that Tunku Abdul Rahman did not directly negotiate with the British when fighting for independence.

“Tunku sought the advice from the sultans, he didn’t go to London straight away. The sultans gave their blessings.

“The British invited the sultans too to negotiate. The independence was given by the sultans, this was not told to us,” he added.

Some 400 former police officers attended today’s anti-communist rally.

The rally was organised by Retired Senior Police Officers’ Association of Malaysia (Respa).

The rally today was in response of a gathering organised by former members of the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Hat Yai Peace Accord happened in early December.

CPM signed the peace accord with the government of Malaysia in Hat Yai, Thailand on December 2, 1989.

The gathering was held in Kajang and some 300 former communist members attended.

Following the gathering, police launched an investigation while the Home Ministry deemed the event as illegal.

Police have so far recorded the statement DAP assemblyman Ronnie Liu over his attendance at the 30th anniversary of the Hat Yai Peace Accord.

Ronnie’s counsel, Ramkarpal Singh said the DAP central executive committee member’s statement was taken as a witness.

Liu said he was invited as a speaker by the organisers during the commemoration event. – December 24, 2019.

  • Is this ex-IGP giler to change the facts of our History being taught how Malaya got its Independence? Something must have gone wrong in his head.

  • Yet again, we are rewriting history. How were the British Malayan Governors Sir Henry Gurney, Frank Swettenham and General Gerald Templer were involved in Malayan politics those days? Henry Gurney was killed on the way to Frazers Hill. Gurney's name is still seen on a famous school for problem children. Of course RMC still has Templer's history as its founder. There was a statue of Frank Swettenham near the clock tower at Jalan Raja Selangor club. As upper form students, we waited in the rain near Lake Gardens to wave the British flag when Princess Elizabeth visited Malaya. Am I dreaming?

  • What a 'refreshing' interpretation of history!!! I suppose advancing age does impact the reasoning power of many people. Retired IGPs are no exception.

  • If the British were not colonialist, then, the patriotic and heroic act of Dato' Maharaja Lela in murdering James W. Birch had been in vain.
