THE Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant will restart tonight, said Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, after water supply to large parts of the state had to be cut because of water pollution.
He said the pollution caused by waste poured down Indah Water Konsortium manholes in Bandar Putera Mahkota had been cleaned by 4pm, and water in Sungai Semenyih was safe for use.
However, some consumers might find residual odour unpleasant, Amirudin said.
“Our hope is to resume supply by 11pm,” he said after the close of the final stage of the Tour de Selangor 2019 cycling race in Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam today.
Amirudin said the recurring water supply disruptions in Selangor this year were not unusual when compared with previous years.
“Our record is four or five water supply disruptions. Maybe this year there was wider media coverage, but there are not that many (water cuts).
“But that doesn’t mean we should be complacent. We have just completed a (water management) plan.”
He said local authorities in Kajang have been ordered to permanently seal manhole covers in Bandar Putera Mahkota.
He said the cause of this recent supply disruption was similar to September’s, when polluters poured waste down manholes.
“The area will be monitored with CCTVs from now on.”
The Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant had to be shut down yesterday as a result of the pollution, shutting off supply to 1.5 million people in Hulu Langat, Sepang, Putrajaya, Petaling Jaya, and Kuala Langat
The National Water Management Commission (Span) today said it will take stern action on the polluters under the Water Services Industry Act.
Span said it will hold discussions tomorrow to prevent recurrences of the problem. – December 22, 2019.
